Discovering Survivors' Stories
Education
October 13, 2010, 10:00 am
Musée commémoratif de l’Holocauste à Montréal, 5151 Chemin de la Côte-Ste-Catherine Métro Côte-Ste-Catherine
During the Holocaust Education Series, from October 13th to October 24th, discover the stories of survivors of several genocides. Four video clips accompany the permanent exhibition of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Museum and present personal stories of the Holocaust, other genocides and human rights violations.
Discovering Survivors' Stories
Marie-Josée Gicali gives her testimony about Rwanda, Genevieve Channarét Srey speaks about Cambodia, Liselotte Ivry presents a very special poem and Manuel Cohen talks about a righteous woman who helped his father during the Holocaust. The Montreal Life Stories Project offers the opportunity to learn from witnesses and to remember.
Survivors' Voices
"We owe it to ourselves to draw lessons from the past in order to be vigilant about all future inhuman acts." says Geneviève Channarét Srey.
A historical reality: Throughout the 20th century, wars, genocides and crimes against humanity have wreaked havoc in all regions of the world. From the genocide of the Armenians to the April 1994 genocide in Rwanda, from the Holocaust to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, to the Srebrenica massacre or Duvalier's dictatorship in Haiti: all these events seem far away from our reality. And yet, their survivors live here and now. They are our colleagues, our neighbours, our friends. Their history is our history.
The Montreal Life Stories Project
Since 2007, the Montreal Life Stories Project has been gathering the stories of those who have witnessed mass violence and who live in Montreal today. Those interviewed tell their own stories to the camera. Their life stories are then publicly circulated, taught in schools and presented on stage.
The Project's work is guided by an innovative yet simple principle: sharing authority. At all levels and at each stage, universities and communities join in their efforts to listen to and tell these stories, which need to be known and recognized.
This exhibition was conceived, designed and created by the Montreal Life Stories in partnership with Parole Citoyenne/Citizenshift.
This installation is part of the 2010 Holocaust Education Series which is organized by the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre.
