Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Commemoration Service

    • Sunday, May 1st, from 7:30p.m. to 9:00p.m.
    • Congrégation Tiféreth Beth David Jérusalem - 6519, chemin Baily Côte-St-Luc

This year's theme, The life that was, seeks to portray all that was destroyed through Nazism and to highlight the consequences of discriminatory and racist policies which still today, can lead to genocide. The elements of the program will help the public understand life in Jewish communities before and during the Holocaust.

    The life that was

The Yom Hashoah service will honour six Holocaust survivors, symbolizing the six million victims of the Jewish genocide during World War II. They will light memorial candles and they will speak through short video-clips:
    • Ben Bicher will speak of Jewish life in Belgium
    • Henry Gitelman will evoke images of Sabbath with his grandparents in Poland
    • Susan Arato, who attended a crafts school to become a stylist, will tell us about her family life
    • Charlotte Szyf will share her memories of summers at the seashore in Poland
    • Dr. Emil Svarc, a young child when Yugoslavia (Croatia today) was occupied, will remember how he enjoyed playing in the park with other children
    • Sarah Engelhard will share her aunt's advice with us
