Elementary

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre recommends introducing grade 6 students to the Holocaust by using our pedagogical tools that incorporate our museum's (and other) artefacts, as well as survivor testimonials.

We propose a complete educational package for Grade 6 students consisting of:
Each activity can be used independently.

Hana's Suitcase

The Hana's Suitcase educational project provides Grade 6 students with opportunities to discover the history of Hana Brady, a young girl from Czechoslovakia who was a victim of the Nazis.  Following the footsteps of a young educator looking for information about Hana Brady, students gradually discover some similarities between the young girl and themselves. The project initiates students in studying key facts about the Holocaust from the perspective of the persecution of the Jews and the impact on the lives of the Brady family; it also encourages students to reflect on the consequences of discrimination in the past and in contemporary society.

The complete activity may be borrowed for free from the Centre by completing the online pre-reservation form. The complete activity contains:
  • The pedagogical guide with ten activities
  • One copy per student of the book Hana's Suitcase, by Karen Levine
  • A Brief History of the Holocaust:  A Reference Tool
  • Nine reproductions
  • A DVD
  • Hana's family photo album
You may also download the pedagogical activities or only some part of it:

The Heart from Auschwitz

The Heart from Auschwitz draws your attention to a special object, a symbol of spiritual resistance created by a group of Jewish female prisoners at the Auschwitz death camp. Risking their own lives despite the prohibitions imposed by the Nazis who sought by all possible means to deny them their humanity, these women succeeded in creating a birthday card for one of their friends. This reflective artistic project enables students to draw on a positive element in their study of the Holocaust.

At the end of the activity, the students construct their own heart.

The complete activity may be borrowed for free from the Centre by completing the online pre-reservation form. The complete activity contains:
  • The pedagogical guide (24 pages)
  • A reproduction of the heart
  • A CD containing:
  1. 1 video on The Heart from Auschwitz
  2. Photos of the museum and the Heart
  3. History of the Heart
